My favorite question to ask engineers is "what makes software hard?" A team of thousands of employees keeps google docs running yet a single talented, motivated engineer can re-make 10% of google docs in a month. Why is it so hard for Google? Ultimately—software has very few hard technical problems left. The largest issue we face now is one of coordination. We are awful at coordinating what software gets built, awful at communicating how that software works once it is, and awful at composing that software into our larger digital landscape.
We've solved this coordination problem in other domains before - we don't need to coordinate our economies - money acts as our tool for coordination. We don't need to coordinate our information - language acts as our tool for coordination. But 'Money' and 'Language' are terrible tools for coordinating computers.
The tension in this missing coordination has been building up for decades. The pressure is at a breaking point, pulled even tighter by the force of AI and LLMs - it's begging to be solved.
So let's solve it.

The San Francisco Compute Company sfcompute.com
Hiring: Principal Full Stack Engineer
About: We make supercomputers. We're in San Francisco. Unlike other providers, who force you into year-long or three-year-long deals, we almost exclusively sell short-term bursts on very-large supercomputers for very-big training runs.
If you want 512 H100s, it would normally cost you in the $12m range, because you gotta buy it out for the whole year. If a provider can sell someone the whole year, then they'll just do that and print money. We'll sell it to you for two weeks (around $500k).
Company Lore:
Originally, SF Compute started as Alex Gajewski and Evan Conrad trying to make a generative music model. We flew to LA, Alex dyed his hair (it was great), and played around with some different architectures. We liked this auto-regressive VAE concept. When we went to scale up our model, we reached out to every provider at the time, who informed us that the minimum purchase was a year, and would cost at least $1m. We did not have $1m.

Looking for a technical co-founder
[email protected]
Probably someone with a lot of experience working with data / web scraping and an interest in e-commerce / hard tech. Ideally a second time founder 22 - 30 who has managed teams and wants to be in person in San Francisco.
I've spent a lot of time thinking about what to do next and have gotten really excited about building infrastructure to support deep-tech companies (like the one I used to run). I talked to ~100 companies and procurement was a common issue.
My current idea is to make purchasing commodity(ish) industrial items like lumber and wire much easier. Specifically, a search tool that uses AI to help determine what your needs are (finished or unfinished lumber? wire clad in aluminum or steel?) and then recommends what to purchase across all the possible brands and vendors. You can buy in one click and subscribe to the things you predictably need. The goal is to augment / replace procurement departments.
There are some pretty interesting network effect elements (demand aggregation) along with the potential to eventually create a futures market for industrial goods. The guided search could also be generalized for consumers (I tried to buy a cooking wok last night and it took 20+ minutes 🙄).
It's still very early stage and I'm spending most of my time talking to customers and looking for a technical co-founder -- probably someone with a lot of experience working with data / web scraping and an interest in e-commerce / hard tech. Ideally a second time founder 22 - 30 who has managed teams and wants to be in person in San Francisco. Very open to breaking any one or two of these rules :)

How can we solve problems too big to fit in any individual's head?
Ray Kurzweil projects that, by 2045, humanity will be hooked up to a "shared neocortex in the cloud" by brain-computer interfaces. We will leave the brain-computer interfaces to Elon Musk[a], but we believe it’s possible to build that "shared brain" now, and that it might look different than many imagine.
We're starting by creating a notebook that augments the user's intelligence.
We want to create a future where nobody feels alone with their ideas, where intellectual soulmates find each other, where superconnectors are empowered. We see our software as critical to creating the frame for humans and machines to work together to solve the world's most important problems.
With a raise of $10 million and the backing of prominent thought-leaders in the field, we are ready to take on these challenges. We are looking for fearlessly creative individuals who can fall in love with personal information management systems with us – which we see as integral to the destiny of the Web.

Hazel - [email protected]
The trucking and logistics industry provides the backbone of the US economy. But the payments infrastructure on which it runs is broken. For the hard-working men and women of this sector, the existing suite of payment tools is outdated, difficult to use, prone to fraud, and saddled with shady fee structures. The incumbent players in this space often overlook the economic and practical needs of this user base.
We’re changing that RoadFlex is building Stripe for Transportation — modernizing the payments infrastructure for trucking and logistics. Supply chains rely on the timely movement of capital to function efficiently. Our end game is a world in which that capital movement occurs fairly, smoothly, and without delay. As we pursue that end game, we aim to center our customers in every way — offering them world-class customer experience and building products that work with and around the unique constraints of their daily lives. We build for fleet managers in the office and drivers on the road. We strive for products that are efficient, satisfying, and useful. Our customers enable our modern economy — they deserve better.
We are hiring for a vast number of roles:

Stealth
Interesting / time-sensitive opportunity: A really great friend of mine (Josh Payne) who is a Stanford CS grad and now at the Stanford GSB; has just partnered with some well known celebrities/Silicon Valley figures to build an NFT-related project. He's a great full-stack hacker but looking for another person with blockchain dev (+ possibly full stack) background to join as a founding engineer or potentially cofounder. It's in stealth, but let me know at [email protected] if you'd like a connection to Josh – or feel free to ping him directly and mention me (He's [email protected]).
We’re building a Flow-based platform that elevates a diverse range of popular digital content from consumables to collectables. Leveraging pre-existing relationships in main-stream entertainment verticals, we’ve inked exclusive deals with some of the world’s most desirable media providers and turn the most memorable moments of their content into NFT collectables. We’re currently still in stealth, and our team has moved quickly to lock down an impressive board and institutional backing. We’re now searching for developers can help us build a world-class marketplace and gallery to host this incredible content.
We’re looking for blockchain (Flow or Ethereum) and/or full-stack developers/heads of engineering/technology to join us as we quickly build a platform that can support rapid scale.

We are looking for an ASR speech recognition scientist who will continue improving our proprietary online speech system, including improving the word error rate (WER) and expanding to multiple accents. As a Senior Speech Recognition Scientist, your work will directly impact our core product offering and customer base.
nLine (Berkeley/Remote) - [email protected]
Looking for a lead embedded engineer and UX-focused front-end developer
nLine deploys simple infrastructure monitoring sensors in developing regions, and reports the performance of this infrastructure to utilities, investors, government agencies, and the public. In developing regions rapid population and economic growth leads to infrastructure that grows organically and performs poorly. We expect similar unplanned infrastructure construction to arise in response to the mass migrations associated with climate change. We believe that cheap, and flexible monitoring of infrastructure can both improve the performance and accountability of existing systems and better guide the design of new construction. We value scientific integrity, transparency, and impact.

Karuna Health (San Francisco) [email protected]
Our mission is to give every patient a guide in the healthcare system.
Karuna's software allows patients to stay in touch with their care teams using the same channels they use with friends and family: from Whatsapp and text messaging to voice calls and video. To handle the increased volume and quality of interactions, our automation tools help care teams prioritize, measure their performance, and cut through back office work so that they can focus on doing what they do best: building authentic relationships with the patients who need them most.
Our focus today is on care management, a niche part of the healthcare ecosystem dedicated to serving the most vulnerable and sickest members of our communities. In the future, we will enable healthcare organizations to build deeper, more impactful relationships with every patient, while also helping them expand the scope and accessibility of their services for all.

Namebase is a seed stage registrar and exchange for the soon-to-be-released Handshake blockchain, the latest-and-greatest attempt at decentralizing naming. By solving some of the underlying cryptographic challenges preventing previous blockchain naming projects from succeeding in the past, Handshake has a clearer path to adoption than any of its predecessors, in part because it’s 100% backwards compatible with DNS.
- After raising $10.2mm from more than 50 of silicon valley’s top VCs and angels (including a16z, Sequoia, and Greylock), Handshake pledged to donate 75% of all Handshake tokens (HNS) to open source developers around the world. Namebase is optimally positioned to provide these HNS recipients with day-one liquidity, due to our special partnership with an exchange provider whose software has matched hundreds of millions of dollars of trades to date.
- Our founding team includes engineers from MIT, a designer from Squarespace, and a second-time founder of a YC-backed company. If you’re interested in greatly expanding the set of people that get unique value from blockchain technology, then say hi and we’ll convince you that Namebase is the best opportunity to build the beautiful interfaces that inspire people to use blockchain in 2018.

Stripe built an internal tool that organically grew to 40% of all employees, saving tons of hrs/mo. We heard similar stories across 100+ conversations in fintech, marketplaces and healthcare. Inspired, we're building a horizontal low-code platform for operators to own their business logic, bridging business intelligence and workflows.
