World Quest Guild (Quests.world)
In the future, we will think of work differently: We will ask: what is there that needs to be done in the world? And then mobilize a collective human effort to achieve it.

We have to do what jobs we have to do to survive – but what is life really about? Going on quests – together or alone – to do the worthwhile things in the world (Helping people in need! Cool, instrumentally or intrinsically worthy project!)! World Quest Guild is a central group and dashboard for those playing the “larger game” available in life – that of working together to get everyone’s needs met, solve humanity’s critical problems, and understand the mysterious.

Watch this ridiculously inspiring introduction section by Jack Park (Youtube ~20min on 2x speed), who knew Doug Engelbart . Gets all the way from knowledge management to the metaverse/starting a guild/a quest manager for the world. (“Key Quotes”)

Misc

  • Vrcoralreefs.jacobcole.net – #projectPage

  • Idea #ideaSeed #XPrize We need to create accessible ways for people to experience the impact of climate change in way that is “in your face”

  • We need to create more “in your face ways” to experience the impacts of climate change on beautiful ecosystems like coral reefs etc., and more generally share how to create more ways ways from more people to experience how great these things that are already being destroyed. It's easy not to think about them when you don't interact with them.

  • Maybe more documentaries like the Living Sea. Maybe interactive games and experiences that take place in real environments which are degrading, in general this is a use case of the #Metaverse

  • #socialenterprise #nonprofitHelp funnel resources/funding to under resourced/underdog nonprofits via e-commerce/social enterprise; the idea would be to move towards helping nonprofits operate better through a connector entity (like No Rival Industries) where projects are created sustainably on a volume basis and purely crowdfunded where 100% of profits are given away on the notion of ideation for the next-gen of nonprofit fundraising

  • Volume 1: COVID hits, manufacture handcrafted cloth masks in the US and send out donations to shelters, hospitals and grocers across the country

  • Volume 2: Partner w/ Spread The Vote ---nonprofit that fights to help the 21 million eligible voters in the US get IDs in voter-ID required states; we sell our first apparel line to get funding towards this cause --$40 is their operating cost for an ID aka 4 shirts sold net 1 ID. How can we scale this without a marketing budget?
  • Volume 3 and onward--TBD, looking for ways to scale and the “why” for starting this

  • #actionable #specific “ThunderPledge”  Thunderpledge.jacobcole.net – a website like Kickstarter for pledging to take collective actions when you reach a critical mass. For instance, there are a large number of people who would consider becoming vegetarian for climate reasons, but feel like it's pointless unless millions of others do the same. Using ThunderPledge you could pledge to become vegetarian only when a million other people have also committed the same. At that point, not only would you know for certain that your change is part of making a difference, but you would have a ready-made support group of people all trying to do the same thing.

This generalizes to many  applications – for instance organizing a boycott. Boycotts are useless unless they reach critical mass. (A friend called this “Kickstopper”!). Additionally it could perhaps be worth making a variant “ThunderVote” specifically dedicated to the voting use case. If you are, for instance, a democrat in a largely Republican area, you might think it's useless for you to get out and vote. But using this site, you could mark who you’d vote for with the touch of a button, but only pledge to actually make it to the polls if a thousand other people of your same political leanings in your district do the same.

Key Quotes from Jack’s inspiring talk

54:49 "30 years ago I was diagnosed with leukemia. If I hadn't done some immediate research before I accepted the doctor's ideas of what I was going to do we wouldn't be having this conversation."

58:57 "A stage five [kidney disease] means you get a transplant or you go on dialysis. I screwed up and became stage four, so I'm using the crap out of LiteNet [Jack's information management system] now to study kidney disease. This is the kind of stuff that's going to befall a lot of people and they're not even going to see it coming. I mean I'm a guy that studies math, studies medicine, and I listen to my body, and I still screwed up. It's just gonna happen, so whatever we can do – everybody who's in this on this call right now – and whatever we can do to get ourselves geared up to this kind of thinking – whatever it is – your brand is not the same as my brand and I don't want it to be, but your brand is going to affiliate with my brand and I'm going to affiliate with yours, and we're going to learn from each other and that's how this the planet's going to get fixed...There was a lot to like in your demo"

56:00 “I'm here today and it's because I learned how to do research. Look I was simply motivated, you know what I'm saying? Now we're faced with a pandemic and everybody should be as motivated as I was when I was diagnosed with leukemia, but they're not; they still go to the beach they go to parties and not wear their face masks and blah blah blah, and we have this other thing called climate change – and look, you and I are in California – I don't know about the rest of these people, but California is burning and the Gulf Goast is being flooded and the East Coast is probably going to have some some of its own problems – the point is climate change is going to be equivalent to a diagnosis of leukemia very soon for all humankind.”

57:13 “We need these tools, all of them, and to be honest with you, they need to be in the hands of everybody. And we need the MOOCs and the blogs and the people learning how to use them, so they can think clearer. This is it. This is our mission."

On Guilds

1:20:57 "The six of us in this room right now are effectively a guild. Why did I say guild?...We've come together to talk about a problem space and we've come together maybe in the context of actually doing a solution...

When somebody once stood up in a conference room [in Palo Alto and asked me] 'How could we have civil conversations online about politics?' my answer was 'World of Warcraft meets global sense making'. Why did I say that? It's because when humans come into guilds to do epic quests – how world of Warcraft is, you know? the legends of Zelda and whatever – and you're going into a cave and what are we doing in the guild in World of Warcraft is, you know, 'that guy over there is going to drive this tank' and 'this person's going to wield these swords' and this person's going to do this and  they're playing roles in a Warcraft sort of thing – but what are they doing is they're problem solving, they're inventing a solution – how can we win this battle? – and it's against a quest to save Zelda or whatever.

Okay, but now, supposing, the quest is 'what are the known causes of climate change?' – so we would now have our roles well:  'I need somebody to be the group philosopher and invent what questions should we be asking' and some group of members would be role players saying 'well here's the kinds of answers we think we're hypothesizing; these are the answers: CO2 is a cause and blah blah blah', and then 'We need these research rabbits who actually go out on the web and try and bring in evidence'.  It's the same process you do if you’ve got a cancer: what are the questions I should ask, what are the answers I need answers to, and where's the evidence for these, for these ideas. Okay, so you're doing this in this guild – doing these roles now in the guild.” ~Jack Park, on Guilds and Global Sense Making

 that's one of my

okay now that isn't exactly why we're
here today but let's we're pretending
so when somebody once asked me in

um he stood up in a conference room and

how could we have civil conversations

my answer was world of warcraft meets
global sense making that was my answer
why did i say that it's because
when humans come into guilds

and what
what are we doing in the guild in world

you know that guy over there is going to

they're playing roles but they're in a

but what are they doing they're problem

how can we win this battle and it's
against
a quest save zelda or whatever
okay but now supposing the quest is what
what are the known causes of climate

so we would now have our roles well i
need somebody to have
to be the group philosophic philosopher
and invent
what questions should we be asking and

and then we need these research rabbits
who actually go out on the web and try

it's the same process you do if you got

what are the what are the questions i
should ask what are the answers i need
answers to and where's the evidence for
these
for these ideas okay so you're doing in
this guild
these roles now in the guild"

My Thoughts (Park)

Fundamentally, I see the big picture as one of taming information. I am inspired by the book Taming Text. I was pointed at that book when I mentioned at an Apache Solr meetup that I was building a platform I called SolrSherlock - a Watson-like agent system - on Solr; the book’s co-author told me his book was available in early access so I bought it. It was clear, concise, and very helpful. I later stopped using Solr and migrated to ElasticSearch, so I renamed the project to be less tech-centric to OpenSherlock.

The book concept generalizes from taming text to taming information, but in that space, we must consider a primary engine of information creation: humans. And, the prime mover of information by humans is conversation, so my game is really one of taming conversations.  Guild processes in the context of epic quests, for me, serve that purpose.

Here is a book review for Total Engagement. which is about this entire concept.

Thoughts about talk - Chris Barnes

The talk was genuinely incredible. I found Jack’s framework of work as a series of “quests” that are performed with a “guild” to be particularly insightful, and have been pondering it for the past few weeks. I think that framing work as a progression through a series of quests is beneficial for a series of reasons:
- It is a framework that encourages thoughtful selection, and appreciation for the work that you are currently pursuing. It’s not just a job, every single project is a quest that is undertaken with a group of dedicated guild-mates for a specific purpose.
- For me, it frames life as an epic adventure. Thinking of myself as an adventurer going on joint missions with fellow adventurers draws a personal parallel to the stories that I’ve read in the past about heroes. The Quest framework allows me personally to embody the hero position, but in an incredibly humble way, as I’m a hero surrounded by other purposeful adventuring heroes as well.

Scratch notes:

- Gift economy: no concept of “needing” to work to receive. Each person gives their gift willingly: just like people are into math recreationally, someone’s really into giving the gift of food, recreationally, some are into giving the gift of shoes, recreationally → everyone gets free food and shoes, etc.

  • Marcel Mauss #anthropologist studied gift economies: “The Gift”.  The secret as that giving is not something we do, it’s something we are; it comes from a state of nonaction <> “Movement is not something we do, it’s something that we are” ~Emilie Conrad #effortlessness #wuwei . Stillness isn’t stasis. Altruism isn’t something we do, it’s something we are, it doesn’t require mind-intent

The stakes are higher than you might expect; our future as a human race depends on our ability to build "humanity 3.0", which can think and act together at an unprecedented scale, that  2 augment intelligence with a digital brain  , allowing vaster states of awareness that can solve the problems we've created today. As Einstein said, you can't solve problems with the same level of consciousness that created them. And an easeful, flow-inducing note-taking that is friendly with every state of consciousness is just the first step.
