I always thought the Robinson Crusoe / MacGyver ideal of "tinker better external tools to make life more comfortable and live longer" was the only way to go. I then got into tinkering with "internal mechanisms" and philosophies to make it easier to thrive in the face of cold, pain, and other challenges. Then things really flipped when I realized  and "I can just think and things move" helped me realize that in order to take any physical action, I first move an intention – something immaterial. Per my friend's physics book I came to appreciate that immaterial things are valid pieces of reality, not to be denied. Then I realized that immaterial things are more the "real" me. #transcendence

https://www.resilience.org/stories/2020-08-21/how-to-bring-about-catastrophic-success-in-the-face-of-climate-change/ Eric Holthaus - “Climate change is a product of a system of White supremacy and colonization over the past 500 years,” Holthaus says. “A certain group of people felt it was justified to exploit people and land. That’s the simplest explanation of climate change.” When viewed with such clarity, the problem of climate change no longer feels like a scientific inevitability. In fact, Grant D Holton

Albert Bandura: Self Efficacy

Saskia’s new development
- Changing to education by end of September
- Social enterprise trying to disrupt education
- Student path towards careers + career advancement focus

  • Showing optionality outside of linear career path

  • ~michael Squiggly line

  • Developing relevant skills through alternate channels than day-to-day job

One of the male participants’ response
- Finding non-profit opportunities to take on leadership roles while working at non-leadership roles at a job
- Six sigma or community programs also helpful for this

  • Established connections with business decision makers + politicians
  • Allowed for career development outside of typical role

Squiggly line
- Opposite of pattern matching typical around Silicon Valley
- #book Range by David Epstein → awesome book
- Hypothesis from saskia:

  • Opposite of Linear process hypothesis
  • Jump from one end to another
  • Applies to individual careers along with many other things, including evolution of ideas & connections
  • World typically has a linear expectation of progression, when in reality, it can frequently be a squiggle

  • Jacob’s perspective on intersection of ideas and flow for the quest of knowledge

  • I build tools for collaborative ideation among other things (personal information management + tracking the web’s ideas)

  • Hallmarks of knowing things in a space is having a map of the web of ideas in the space

  • Much more powerful than a keywords based search

  • 2 things come to mind

  • Paul Graham talks about high levels of discipline can be detrimental for a founder → miss pivots and bigger opportunities, should promote more daoist approach to development

  • Slack an awesome example

  • Jim Palotta

  • Very linear, silicon valley, by-the-book thinker for building startups

  • Realized a soft focus might be more helpful for my personal situation

  • Martial arts ties in

  • Samurai’s are taught to have Mountain Eyes in battle → maintain distant and broad focus to be responsive as opposed to reactive

  • My dad

  • Well known sleep researcher + Yogi

  • Dreams hypothesis

  • Only have limited number of lenses/memories typically

  • But dreams allow for interaction with distant and the full book of memories

Karl Sjogren12:31 PM
CLEESE: Well, it seems to me that the great problem is that very few people are behaving rationally. And the people who say we must follow the science have notions that the science changes about every 48 hours. So I don't know if there's anything that I can say about this. I don't begin to understand it. I really don't. I talk about a lot of things, including science. And I talk about - do you know of Tetlock's research on pundits?

GREENE: I don't.

CLEESE: You should. Tetlock is a psychologist

which relaltes to Category theory for the sciences
Karl Sjogren12:31 PM
CLEESE: You should. Tetlock is a psychologist at the University of Philadelphia. And he asked 284 pundits in social fields, economic fields, political fields. And he asked them what was going to happen in five or ten years. And he discovered they were hopeless. They're completely clueless. And the interesting thing is that the most famous pundits were the worst prognosticated.

GREENE: Oh, that's helpful.
Saskia Verraes12:32 PM
there is a trend in regards to the climate change story telling where the "apart from nature" is being promoted as the key to getting people engaged. ie talk only about the potential threat to humanity - dont talk about the loss of  earth and other species. i'd be keen to hear more how we can turn this trend to show people we are part of nature ( indigenous groups do tend to get that a lot better then "western world!)
Mark Moulton12:34 PM
Thanks for this Saskia, yes the indigenous work always informs us. You can't love what you do not know. So, getting to know nature (of which you are a part) crosses the threshold into loving (not just) humans in a different context with "all my relations"

Working together is the only way to solve the problems we need to address to have any kind of future. To achieve that we need to let go of the notion of competition and focus on finding ways to collaborate first and foremost to he;p each other to scale up so that together we can transform the world.

ideaflow.io is our homepage! We’re in private beta at the moment. Just raised $10M and are on track for a private beta in Q4. In the meantime, let’s talk!  If you’ve got an urgent use case we can spin you up a private server right now. Here’s a video demo for reference  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4feZo9PqTlo

“ThunderPledge” – a website like Kickstarter for pledging to take collective actions when you reach a critical mass. For instance, there are a large number of people who would be who would consider becoming vegetarian for climate reasons but  feel like it's pointless unless millions of others do the same. Using ThunderPledge you could pledge to become vegetarian only when a million other people have also committed the same. At that point, not only would you know for certain that your change is part of making a difference, but you would have a ready-made support group of people all trying to do the same thing.

This generalizes to many  applications – for instance organizing a boycott. Boycotts are useless unless they reach critical mass. (A friend called this “Kickstopper”!). Additionally it could perhaps be worth making a variant “ThunderVote”  specifically dedicated to the voting use case. If you are, for instance, a democrat in a largely Republican area, you might think it's useless for you to get out and vote. But using this site, you could mark who you’d vote for with the touch of a button, but only pledge to actually make it to the polls if a thousand other people of your same political leanings in your district do the same.

#idea Make a list of worthwhile “low hanging fruit”  projects in need of technical contributions and get talented engineering high school students  to build them. Unlike in the working world, high school students have a strong incentive alignment with non-profit initiatives – applying for college – and therefore have time to do so.
